Downgrading from GNOME 3 to GNOME 2

NOTICE: The old version of this post has been deleted because of system risks.

As GNOME 3 was released a few months ago, many people were curious to try it out. Unfortunately, many of them had problems, some not even able to log in. I was one of them.

I decided to make a shell script to downgrade GNOME 3 to GNOME 2, based on ppa-purge.

  1. Open up a Terminal window (accessible from the GNOME 3 applications menu)
  2. Type in it:
    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:lkjoel/dggnome3
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install dggnome3
    sudo downgradegnome3.sh
  3. Restart your computer

If you have any problems with this method, feel free to comment below.

Just a couple notes. Aptitude is not installed by default in Ubuntu any more. And gnome-core is Debian’s GNOME metapackage but isn’t installed by most Ubuntu users.

It might be worth taking a fresh Ubuntu 11.04 install, adding the GNOME 3 PPA stuff and seeing what needs to be done to restore it back to vanilla 11.04.

Nevermind. gnome-core looks like a good way to ensure you have the basic parts of GNOME installed; I just hadn’t ever noticed that package before. I was thinking of gnome-desktop-environment which pulls in a lot of other stuff.

Aptitude is a dependancy of ppa-purge, so no need to worry about that.
gnome-core just installs the core dependancies of GNOME.

Does this work to allow one to have the ability to customize the desktop the way I had it before Natty or Oneiric were released?…

You cannot downgrade Oneiric GNOME 3 with the script. Only Natty.
Yes, it just simply removes the conflicting PPAs, so it just re-becomes GNOME 2.

So I’m correct in my assumption that Mark Shuttleworth & Canonical are trying to cram Ubiquity down the the throats of the users irregardless of whether or not they have a 1920 X 1200 LCD monitor on their desktop instead of a small tablet or netbook???… I didn’t even like the Netbook Remix the 1 time I tried it on my netbook. If I wanted a MacOS knock off then I would have bought a Mac. I used to sing the praises of Ubuntu to anyone that would listen, I guess I can’t do that in good conscience any longer. Time to test drive KDE, Fluxbox, LXDE & XFCE to see which 1 will be the easiest to replicate the GNOME desktop experience to which I had become accustomed over the previous 4 1/2 years. Maybe it it will be easier to just ditch Ubuntu & try Linux Mint?…
