I’ve finally made the first release of Project Harmless. It only supports AssaultCube, and there are no command-line arguments, but apart from that, it works!

For those of you who don’t know what Project Harmless is, it’s a Mod (modification pack) that changes the more harmful weapons (pistols, knifes, rifles etc..) into less harmful weapons (fly swatter, water gun, banana etc..). More info (and screenshots) here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/projectharmless/.

It will not replace any of AssaultCube’s files, so to run the Project Harmless version of it, you must click on PH_AssaultCube instead of AssaultCube.

Download link is here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/projectharmless/files/.

To install, simply extract it, and run assaultcube/install_now.sh (it will open up a Terminal window for you).

Project Harmless is simply a weapon pack that makes a serious and violent FPS into a less violent and funnier FPS.

As you may have noticed, I’ve switched to launchpad.net instead of sourceforge.net. The reason for doing so is that sourceforge.net had to many problems with it, and I didn’t need all the extra features. So the new URL for the project is here: https://launchpad.net/relinux. For you, this is just a simple re-bookmarking and understanding the new interface.
The tickets section is in Bugs and Blueprints (use Blueprints for feature requests), the forum is located in the Answers section, and the blog is in Announcements.

Now for the coding, I’ve just released relinux 0.3.0a, with an incredible amount bug fixes and new features (including WUBI Support and a backup mode). If you have any problems with it, report it in the Bugs section. I won’t add new features for 0.3, as I’m currently developing relinux 0.4.
relinux 0.4 will have even more features and bug fixes, but the big deal about it is that it will use C++ and Assembly (AT&T syntax, not Intel syntax) instead of BASH, and it will have a new Qt GUI. It will also have a chroot environment so that you can make an ISO without getting a virtual machine, a new partition or a new box.
You can find the current new features for 0.4 here (if you want any new features for 0.4, just send a blueprint): https://blueprints.launchpad.net/relinux/0.4.

If you are interested in helping relinux out, email me at lkjoel@ubuntu.com. At this moment, I really need packagers, C++ developers, bug reporters, and testers.

Many people try purging packages and reinstalling them to reset them, but it sometimes removes other packages with it, so it becomes a headache (especially when you are trying to reset the X11 configuration files, removing a few hundred packages with it).

To solve these problems, I made a script called purgeconfig that will artificially reset the configuration files (manually removing the configuration files, marking the packages as purged, then reinstalling the packages).

WARNING: Do NOT run Apt/Aptitude/DPKG/Synaptic/Software Center while running purgeconfig.

Download and install the script with this command:

wget http://purgeconfig.sf.net/purgeconfig.sh && chmod +x purgeconfig.sh && sudo cp purgeconfig.sh /usr/bin/purgeconfig

Usage is simple:

sudo purgeconfig package1 package2 package3 etc...

You can specify the architecture:

sudo purgeconfig package1:i386 etc...

Remastersys has been around for a long time, and though it hasn’t been updated in a long time (EDIT: It was dead, but now he is maintaining it), many people still use it. Remastersys is very closed in what you can do with it, since it’s quite hard to change the splash image, and sometimes you have to edit the code just to be able to change more options that what is given in the remastersys.conf file.

I created 2 systems with it (one personal and one public), and I didn’t like the lack of options, so I decided to make my own script based on it, to give much more customization. Though it is still at a beta stage, it gives many more options, and much more usability.

The goal for relinux is to make professional-looking ISOs, while the goal for remastersys is to make personal ISOs and backups.

To install, download the latest tar.gz file at https://launchpad.net/relinux. Untar it, and follow the instructions in the INSTALL file.

You can customize the system as much as you would like, except for these limitations (most of which will be removed in a future release):

It only supports GRUB2, so no BURG or GRUB-Legacy

It must have an X11 display, since Ubiquity (the installer) requires X11 to run

You cannot use another installer than Ubiquity

The compressed filesystem size must be below 4GB (no workaround). It will tell you if it’s over 4GB (compressed), but I recommend that you keep your system size below 6GB (uncompressed).

It will install metacity, but next release, this limitation will be removed.

After you have customized your system at your liking, you will need to create a configuration file. To do this, simply type in a Terminal window:

cp /etc/relinux/relinux.conf ./relinux.conf
sed -i 's:EXCLUDES="\(.*\)":EXCLUDES="\1 '`readlink -f ./relinux.conf`'":g' ./relinux.conf
readlink -f ./relinux.conf

The last command will tell you where the configuration file is located. Edit that file to your liking. Some splash screens are located in /etc/relinux/relinux/splash.

Before you start editing, if you want to save your settings/themes, do this (replace USERNAME by your actual username):

Press CTRL+ALT+F3

Log in as your normal user

Type: sudo passwd

Enter a password for root

Type: exit

Log in as root (with the password you gave for root)

Type: usermod -d /etc/skel USERNAME; chown -R USERNAME /etc/skel

Reboot your system (can be done with the reboot command)

Then you can log into your normal user, and all of your changes to the theme, desktop background, panel configuration etc… will be saved.

Once you have finished editing it, you will want to create the ISO file, so type this into the Terminal window:

sudo relinux fullclean ./relinux.conf
sudo relinux iso ./relinux.conf

The last (and final) step will take a while.

Simply follow the directions (if there are any).

I decided to make a comparison chart with Relinux and Remastersys:

Relinux

Remastersys

Actively Developed

T

T

DIST/ISO mode

T

T

Backup mode

T (will be removed in 0.4, as remastersys is good for the backup mode, relinux is not)

T

Splash Image Customization

T

F

Can use

T

T

GUI

F (will add in 0.4)

T

WUBI

T

F

Language

BASH (will be C++ in 0.4)

BASH

UPDATE: The new name is CosmOS!

Instead of having a web browser like Firefox or Google Chrome, it will use a Chromium hack (chromium-browser –app=URL)

You can tab many windows together, sort of like workspaces in a workspace.

The system is much lighter than other systems (including Ubuntu), since most of the apps are in the internet, such as:

Office suite=Google Docs/Zoho Docs

Notepad=Google Notebook/Zoho Notebook

IRC Client=Mibbit/IRC Cloud/Alice IRC

I have been having flash problems lately, and after a lot of searching, I found the answers to the problems. I decided to make a script that would fix the problems automatically, install flash fully and safely, and provide an advanced flash control panel.

The script is currently in Alpha, so be careful with it. Also note that the script is only for Natty (11.04) and Oneiric (11.10).

To install and run:

Open up a Terminal window and type in it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lkjoel/flash-doctor
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install flash-doctor zenity wget

To run:

bash /usr/bin/flash-doctor

Most used control panel settings and documentation:

resetsettings: Resets the flash settings

avhardwaredisable: If set to true, it will disable any interaction with Audio/Video hardware components

autoupdatedisable: If set to true, it will disable auto updates for flash

autoupdateinterval: If autoupdatedisable is set to false, this setting will set how often flash will check for updates (in days)

fullscreendisable: If set to true, it will disable full screen in flash applications (e.g. YouTube)

thirdpartystorage: If set to true, applications will be able to store some information on your computer

localstoragelimit: If thirdpartystorage is set to true, this setting will decide how much space flash applications are allowed to store

assetcachesize: If localstoragelimit is set to option 6 (user), this option will determine how much space flash applications are allowed to store

localfilereaddisable: If this option is set to true (highly recommended), it will stop flash applications from being able to read any file on your HD

disablesockets: If set to true, it will disable flash from grabbing any sockets from your computer

overridegpuvalidation: If set to true (dangerous), it will pass any GPU validation checks, which may give an increase in speed, and fix a few problems, but it may damage your graphics card permanently.

A full documentation for the control panel will be available soon (in the final release).
